Some celebrity hikers who are perhaps used to a more pampered lifestyle were also forced to rough it, sometimes even having to forfeit a shower for days on end. “I think it’s good not to live exquisitely sometimes... It reminds us to act in a more natural and authentic way,” Chen said in a live webcast.

In the last round, she touched the judges with her emotional rendition of Song of Herding Sheep (《牧羊曲》) and edged out Wang Zulan by 3 points to win. “This is a big part for friends and music instead of a true contest... Through crossing over, we’ve seen more possibilities and enjoyed more beauty,” Liu wrote on Sina Weibo after her win.

Director and actor Xu Zheng has worked together with Wang on Lost on Journey (《人在囧途》, 2010) and Lost in Thailand (《泰囧》,2012). His microblog account has been flooded with comments like “why didn’t you speak for Wang?” On Aug 19, Xu posted a screenshot of these comments, denouncing what was implied to be “moral coercion”. “What he needs now is calmness and private space... Don’t turn his divorce into an internet farce,” he wrote.
